Kick-Start 2020 with 20/20

How To Be An Effective

5 Resolutions to keep your vision 20/20 for 2020

1. Organise

Get your ship together. Spend 1 hour at the beginning (or end depending on how when you want your week to start) of each week planning the week ahead. Break that hour down as follows:

    1. 15 minutes planning your budget
    2. 15 minutes making a grocery list
    3. 15 minutes planning your food, cooking, and eating out
    4. 15 minutes planning exercise, work, and any social events

If your workweek begins on a Monday, do this on Sunday night an hour before you want to go to bed. It will be the last and first thing on your mind as you head into your new week. If you really like, create a bullet journal or download an organisation app to help you out (we recommend Trello).

2. Sleep

Got to sleep earlier. This means turning off your phone! If there is one resolution to make this year it should be to turn your phone off one hour before going to bed every night.

Plan your sleep so you won’t need an alarm. If you go to bed 7-8 hours before you need to wake up, guess what, you won’t need to set an alarm clock. Your body’s natural rhythms, the sun, and your subconscious mind  will wake you up all on their own. So count backwards 7 hours from the time you want to wake up, then make a commitment to turn your phone off one hour before you’d like to fall asleep.

To fall asleep, do that thing our parents used to do: read a book, write in your journal, or just lie in bed and meditate until you nod off for the night. Sounds too easy right? That’s because it is.

3. Exercise

10 minutes of exercise every day. That’s all that is needed. Simply youtube daily exercise and you’ll find an abundance of routines you can do at home, with no equipment, that will get your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your blood flowing.

(This is also a great way to activate the serotonin and endorphin networks in your brain to give you those natural feel good feelings and set your day up for success.)

4. Eat Good

Eat real food, not too much, and mostly plants. Did the end of 2019 bring with it a lot of chaos, broken habits, and binge or stress eating? Or perhaps over the holidays you ate your weight in holiday ham (I know I did) and are looking to get back to a healthy minimum. Well begin simply, I recommend following Michael Pollan’s 3 simple rules for eating

  1. Eat Food

Cut down on the processed foods and don’t eat anything with more than 5 ingredients in it you cannot pronounce. Buy from the items on the outsides of groceries stores as those ones are the fresh, grown, or farmed foods that need to be replaced often.

  1. Not Too Much

Always leave the table a little hungry. It can take 5 -10 minutes for the stomach to communicate to the brain that it has food in it. So eat a small meal and then wait 5 minutes. If you’re still hungry help yourself to a handful of nuts.

  1. Mostly Plants

No need to cut out meats, sugars or fats completely but if you aim to eat mostly plants then the others become treat foods and not diet staples. Just by changing your perception you can change your diet to a more healthy, aligned perspective (bananas are essential).

5. Communicate

Tell someone (yourself) you love them. If you find this difficult say it in the mirror at least three times when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning. If you don’t feel like saying it, just think it and start your day feeling the love. Here are 100 subtle ways to tell someone you love them, for you shy lovebirds.

6. (Bonus) Have Fun

This is not about knuckling down, doing the hard yards, battening down the hatches, or putting your nose to the grindstone. Being organised, eating healthy, sleeping right, and communicating with your loved ones feels good. It will make you happier, healthier, and prone to less stress and anxiety. Remember, your life happens to your body not your mind. Take care of your body and your body will take care of your mind. Have fun, don’t take it too seriously, and realise breathing feels good!

TL;DR

Too Long; Didn’t Read

To tackle 2020 with 20/20 all you need to do is turn your phone off an hour before bed. Sleep for at least 7 hours. Wake up 3 hours before needing to leave for work so you can eat right and exercise, and don’t forget to tell someone you love them, even if it’s yourself. Last but not least do none of the above if you don’t want to it’s your life!
