An Online Amazing Race

Our Online Amazing Race is the perfect way to connect remote workers to a competitive, fun, think-outside-the-box experience from the comfort of their home office.

The Setup

After 3 months of working from home, we knew that an online Amazing Race experience would be a good idea. Previously, we ran small scale city-wide versions using our Go Game app. But we wanted to challenge ourselves to build something that could be played from the comfort of a home office. Our client requested a large conference-style experience that was to be playable over a 3 day period. This company wanted to show its partners, some 380 people, how they were all connected within a larger picture.

The Build

What makes an amazing race enjoyable? We wanted to take the core elements of the experience and somehow translate them to an online platform. Needless to say, we had to remove the running, the globetrotting, and the physical components. So what were we left with: challenges and puzzles. We stripped the experience down to a few key components.

We wanted our players to all to follow the same route. Thankfully, this is easily done by the software we use. So we decided that players would alternate between visiting airport locations and travel destinations. By completing puzzles and challenges at these stops we felt confident that each player would be engaging with enough varied content to remain competitive and entertaining.

Puzzles

Puzzles were used to frame travel destinations. These were simple visual puzzles that would reveal the name of their next destination. This answer is the code word used to continue the navigation through the experience. See below for some examples.

Challenges

After solving a puzzle at an airport or point of departure players are guided through a series of challenges inspired by popular travel destinations. These were designed not only to have players complete creative challenges. These were creative and physical and designed to get players out of their chairs and thinking on their feet.

Roadblocks

Roadblock challenges were designed to facilitate our client’s front-facing brand. We positioned a series of brand-focused trivia and creative challenges to have their players engage with the values and goals of the brand itself. These ended up creating the most responsive and hilarious content. Part of our secret strategy is to create an experience that reflects the values and vision of the companies we work for. Thanks to a dedicated team of experience designers we are able to craft a product that looks custom-built by the company for its employees and partners.

Detours

In keeping true to form we also included detour challenges. When you host an online Amazing Race there are some minimum expectations that you must meet. Our detours were programmed to randomly appear for players along the journey. These would involve more in-depth creative challenges like recreating a famous renaissance artwork, or collage photo challenges. Players could choose whether or not to engage with the detours.

Creating Collaboration

We also challenged ourselves by creating an experience that connected members of teams. As each player was playing remotely we wanted them to collaborate together. We incentivised each player to join an online chat via Zoom or Meet. Doing this would ensure the optimal amount of success for each player.

The Outcome

Overall the event was a massive success. The teams who worked online and together scored highly with the most collaborative team winning. We ended up with hundreds and hundreds of videos, photos, and submissions by the players which our client was very happy to see. The platform supported large numbers seamlessly and we were able to successfully transition what some might argue can only be done IRL to online.
