Being a Remote Leader in 2021

How to Be A Remote Leader

You’ve likely gotten somewhat used to working in a remote capacity. You’ve also probably realised how vital it is to have strong guidance from a remote leader. When it comes to virtual management, there are many different options, all for varying situations and requirements.

To help, the experts in managing and leading virtual team-building at Banana Life have put together three key tips that will work across a myriad of situations. We hope this will put a few more tools in your belt as a remote leader.

Tip #1: Identify employees who may have trouble working from home

Different personality types handle remote working in various ways. For this reason, it’s a good idea to identify who may need support more than the others.

In the workplace, those who exhibit lots of empathy are often great co-workers, but they also have high levels of stress and a greater risk of anxiety and depression. When left alone, they can burn out.

On the other hand, your go-getters are highly agile and resilient and likely revel in change and see its opportunity. They may need a little help with their time-management stress but will be fine in their autonomy for the most part.

Tip #2: Be understanding about the fear of change

Change is daunting for everyone, and it even activates a threat circuitry in our brains! If you help your workers identify this early on and sympathise with it, they will often cope better with the change and see the value it brings.

Tip #3: Promote communication

Many people who work in remote situations state that the biggest thing lacking is real and meaningful human connection. Extroverts have a particular issue with this as they get their energy from other people!

To combat this, keep your communication channels varied and open. Be it increasing the use of video communication, organising digital gatherings as “after-work drinks,” or anything else that helps increase social interaction.

Be wary that your people will all have different communication preferences, so try to offer a broad range as best you can within the digital scope.
