Hiring in 2021 – 5 Top Tips

If there is one thing the experts in virtual team-building at Banana Life know about, it’s the make-up of a good team. We run a range of virtual activities to build team working and facilitation skills and constantly see what does and does not work in successful teams across a range of industries.

The step before this, however, is the formation of a good team. To help we’ve put together the top 5 tips for hiring in 2021, so you can form a stable base from which to build a great team on!

5 top tips for hiring

Tip 1: Define the job

Before you search for the right person, you need an in-depth understanding of the role you want to be filled. Carefully define the job with an analysis of the duties, responsibilities, necessary skills, and outcomes. This helps create the job description and allows you to plan your recruiting strategy to ensure you get the right employee.

Tip 2: Review the applications carefully

You will likely be bombarded with applications, but this doesn’t mean you should gloss them over. You don’t want to accidentally place the right person in the “maybe” or “no” pile! A well-written job description helps you narrow down the most qualified candidate before the recruiting process begins, but it is also important to carefully assess applicants’ qualifications, skills, experience, and characteristics. Considering how much time you’ll be spending with this person once they get the job, is a good use of your time upfront.

Tip 3: Ask the right questions

The job interview questions help you separate the desirable from average candidates. Job interviews can be a strange environment at the best of times, but considering the information you want to acquire when forming your questions will help things run more efficiently and be worthwhile.

Tip 4: Run a background check

It is imperative that you ensure the credentials, skills, and experience listed on the resume are actually held by your candidate. Check work references, educational credentials, and criminal history. You absolutely want to know that the person you are hiring is honest.

Tip 5: Go with your gut

With everything listed above considered, you will often get a gut feeling about a potential employee. You will be able to tell if you feel comfortable with the candidate and how well they will acclimatise with your existing team.
