How To Suck at Being a Leader

It would be a little weird if your Google search was the exact heading of this article…

We assume that you DON’T want to suck at being a leader, and that’s why you are here. Well, you’ve come to the right place. As experts in virtual team-building, we are required to lead teams of strangers, weekly, through a range of activities with the goal of producing a tighter-knit unit by the end of it.

This would not work well if we were sucky leaders. So read on to learn how we avoid being that by doing the opposite of these points:

How to suck at being a leader: a checklist

  • Fly at 30,000 feet

Everything looks perfect from 30 thousand feet. There are no potholes or problems that become evident closer to the ground. A sucky leader is never on the ground to see what issues their people have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

  • Be ignorant in the areas you manage

Bad leaders say “I don’t know anything about this” when speaking about something they are directly responsible for. You don’t have to be an expert, but it would make you a sucky leader if you weren’t a little informed about the things under you on the organizational chart.

  • Always talk behind people’s back

The best way to be a bad leader is by ensuring your staff can’t trust you. Make sure you have no integrity and that no one can hold any confidence in you.

  • Take all the credit

Claim the success and blame others for the failures. Never give credit to your team members, and you’ll quickly become the suckiest leader of them all.

  • Always blame someone else

Always avoid working out any issues or identifying their cause; just find a scapegoat and blame them instead. Also, throw in a little public shaming as well; that would be great.
