Why Tangalooma Does Half the Work at Your Next Offsite

Most offsites have the same problem.

Everyone’s physically there. Mentally, they’re still in their inbox.

Tangalooma fixes that before the day even starts.

It’s a 75-minute catamaran ride from Brisbane to Moreton Island. Nobody’s ducking out for a “quick call”. Nobody’s hiding in a corner with a laptop. Your team arrives together and stays together.

That’s why we’ve been partnering with Tangalooma Island Resort for more than 8 years to run team building on the island. The wild dolphins at dusk are a lovely bonus. What we care about is what happens in between.

Why the location does half the work

Put a team in a boardroom and you get boardroom behaviour. Same seats. Same voices. Same people who talk first.

Take them across Moreton Bay and things shift. Hierarchy loosens. Conversations start on the boat that would never happen in the office.

Rule one: change the room and you change the behaviour.

The quiet one ends up leading the mission. The loudest voice in the room gets outsmarted by someone from finance.

That’s where trust gets built. And it’s very hard to fake in a meeting room.

It also helps that the island is set up for groups. Tangalooma’s Conference and Events team looks after the venue, the bookings and the logistics. We look after the game. You get to relax and actually be part of your own event.

What we run at Tangalooma

We adapt our signature programs to suit the resort. We start with your outcomes, then pick the activity. To name a few:

  • Amazing Race. Our most popular. Custom missions around the island, with a dash of Mission Impossible and Australia’s Funniest Home Videos. Up to 2,000 people.
  • Survivor. Our most requested outdoor game. Out of the boardroom and onto the sand, and no one gets voted off. Up to 500 people.
  • The Give Back Game. Teams earn points that turn into donations to the EcoMarines Foundation or a not-for-profit of your choice. Up to 150 people.
  • The Mindfulness Game. For teams who need connection and calm more than competition. Up to 150 people.
  • Game Show. Staying overnight? This is our pick for the evening. Great energy after a full day and a good dinner. Up to 400 people.

Not sure which fits? That’s our job. Tell us what your team needs more of (communication, trust, a reset after a big year) and we’ll shape it from there.

Rule two: outcome first, activity second.

How it works

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

  1. Book your event. The Tangalooma Conference and Events team helps you choose the right activity.
  2. Meet your Game Producer. Someone from Banana Life gets in touch.
  3. Customise and build. Your host tailors the game to your needs, company values or conference objectives.
  4. Game on. On the day, you relax knowing it’s sorted.
  5. Debrief. Your host talks you through the goals achieved, and you can give us feedback on how we did.

What it looks like in real life

Frucor Suntory. We designed an inclusive, competitive experience that tied back to the Frucor Suntory brand. It felt like their day, not a generic activity dropped onto an island.

Cafe 63. They wanted a full day of rewards and team building for staff, store owners and suppliers. We built three experiences around it: The Mindfulness Game, Movie-Making and the Amazing Race. Different groups, one shared day.

Kim Gillespie from PwC put it simply: “You never disappoint.”

Big groups, no bottlenecks

We’ve run events at Tangalooma for more than 900 people across multiple days.

Big groups usually mean long queues, confused instructions and people standing around. That’s why every event we run comes with our No Bottleneck Guarantee.

Rule three: if people are standing in a queue, they’re not building anything.

Your budget goes into a great day, not a logistics headache.

Venues that suit the way your team works

One of the best things about team building at Tangalooma is that you’re not stuck with one room. The resort has a mix of spaces, from conference rooms for up to 300 people to casual beachfront areas.

The Waterfront Pavilion. We’re big fans. It’s a premium beachfront venue with its own slice of ocean frontage, so your team can wrap up an activity and walk straight into a debrief or lunch. Hard to beat for a conference or a milestone celebration.

The Dunes Cabana Club. New on the island. A beachfront space on the resort’s lawns with 20 private cabanas, room for up to 160 guests and a relaxed beach club feel. Great for a casual team celebration, a client event or a sunset drink after the game.

Something smaller? Tangalooma also has breakout rooms, private dining spaces and informal outdoor areas, so you can mix the formal with the fun. Tell us what you’re planning and we’ll work with the resort’s events team to find the right fit.

Not just for the corporate crowd

We also run kids summit programs, and Tangalooma is a brilliant setting for them. Our hunt style activities get students moving, thinking and working together, which beats another day of sitting still.
